Week 20

Monday

Chord Vocabulary: This week we’ll look at the dominant 9th chord, which is known as an extended chord. Since 9th chords technically contain five different notes—root, 3rd, 5th, E7th, and 9th—we have to omit one of them. This is usually the 5th, but not always, as we’ll see in Week 25. We first have the open EE9 followed by its moveable version as E9. Next is an open G9, which is very similar to the second version of G7 in Week 4. Its moveable version, shown as A9 in second position, is a bit of a stretch, but not too bad. Next is an open, rootless BE9, which could also be called Dm7E5 (see Week 12), shown in moveable form as C9. Finally, we have the open E9, which you can compare to the open E7 from Week 5. Since the root, E, has been replaced with the 9th, FB, this is another rootless voicing, and this one in particular also goes by the name of GBm7E5 (Week 12). Use an index-finger barre to play the moveable version, shown as F9.
